In Japan i often get asked what traditional foods there are in Australia and what people eat for breakfast. Every time i get asked this question i have to give the same response answering "Yes we eat Vegemite on toast" and then respond "Actually, we eat allot of fruit". This has got me thinking "What DO we eat for breakfast!?" so this is my list of "What Aussies like to eat for breaky".
Vegemite on toast
Vegemite on toast and a Coffee are the quintessential elements to a good day in Australia. Quick, easy and gets you going with a boost of Vitamin B!
Note: If you have never tried Vegemite, put on lots of butter and a tiny smear of Vegemite to start off with and work up!

Peanut butter and Banana on toast
Here is another oldie but goldie! Peanut butter (the salty type) + Banana + a drizzling of honey and your in heaven!
Porridge
This is what my grandmother feeds me when i go visit, but i would still consider it as a common breakfast, especially for the older generation. Best with milk and a smear of honey!
Weet-bix
Aussies love their weet-bix! So much so you could probably ask someone and they would know how many they can go! 6 is standard for athletes (as i hear) but i find they bricks go soggy before i can eat them so i prefer 4 + a pile of fruit and yogurt!
Muesli
For the more Bowel friendly/ Low GI inclined Muesli is your way to go! lots of fruit nuts and oats to break your fast and last you until lunch time | All-bran is for the hardcore health nuts who want to control their output of food as much as their input. Best with lots of milk and LOTS of fruit... I even put sugar. Try it if you dare! |
Other Cerial
In a Japanese book on breakfasts of the world, Orange juice and Corn Flakes was the Australian entry. I cant disagree with this recommendation but i personally think Vegemite on toast is more popular. | The less healthy but incredibly scrumptious brother of Corn Flakes. Do not pass up a chance to try this, it doesn't have to be breakfast either! |
Fruit
Fruit is a staple that cannot be left out of the list! Especially apples and bananas!
